AAdvantage members are getting a new way to use their miles without having enough for a traditional award ticket. American Airlines is rolling out a cash-and-miles option that lets eligible members apply miles toward the cost of select flights.
The feature is expected to become available to eligible U.S. members through American’s website and app.
• You start with a regular cash fare. Instead of searching for award availability, book a qualifying domestic American flight at its cash price. During checkout, a slider will let you choose how many AAdvantage miles to apply.
• You decide how many miles to use. The more miles you put toward the booking, the less cash you pay. The remaining balance is charged normally, making the feature particularly useful for members with a relatively small mileage balance.
• Traditional award availability isn’t required. That’s an important difference. You aren’t looking for a specific award seat or waiting for a flight to appear in the AAdvantage award inventory.
• The value of each mile is the big question. American has not disclosed a fixed redemption rate. The available cash-and-miles combinations can vary based on the destination, itinerary, flight and potentially your mileage balance. That makes it difficult to know whether a redemption is a good deal until you see the offer at checkout.
• Don’t automatically use your miles. If the redemption rate is weak, paying cash and saving your AAdvantage balance for a traditional award could be smarter. Cash-and-miles can make more sense when you have a small balance that isn’t enough for the trip you want.
One other consideration: only the cash portion is confirmed to earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points, so using more miles could reduce what you earn toward elite status.
The Smarter Take: This is a useful new option for AAdvantage members with leftover miles, but flexibility doesn’t automatically mean better value. Until American’s redemption rates become clearer, compare the cash price with the miles you’re giving up before sliding all the way toward a mileage-heavy booking.
