Explora Journeys is taking its luxury cruise concept beyond the ocean.
The young cruise line has announced plans to enter European river cruising, signing a letter of intent to build its first river ships at Den Breejen Shipyard in the Netherlands.
The company hasn’t revealed how many ships it plans to build, what they will look like or which rivers they will sail. It also hasn’t announced delivery dates or itineraries. Sales are expected to open in 2027.
What makes Explora different?
Since launching its first ship in 2023, Explora Journeys has built its identity around all-suite accommodations, all-inclusive fares and European-inspired design.
Its ocean ships accommodate just over 900 guests at maximum capacity, creating a smaller-scale experience than many large mainstream cruise ships. Dining, high-end shopping and wellness are also central to the brand.
Explora currently operates EXPLORA I, EXPLORA II and EXPLORA III, with three additional ocean ships in development. EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V are scheduled for delivery next year, while EXPLORA VI is expected in 2028.
The brand also appeals to multigenerational travelers, with children’s facilities that include technology such as virtual-reality headsets.
A growing crossover
Explora won’t be the first cruise brand to operate both ocean and river vessels. Viking, Scenic and Celebrity Cruises are already moving across both markets, with Celebrity’s first river ships expected in 2027.
For travelers who enjoy the design and service style of a luxury ocean cruise but prefer the slower pace and destination access of river cruising, Explora’s expansion could create another option.
For now, however, the details remain limited. The ships, routes and onboard experiences are still to be revealed.
