United Airlines is bringing a “basic” fare structure to its premium cabins, giving travelers a lower-priced way to book first class while giving up some flexibility and benefits.
• Three fare options are coming. Starting in fall 2026, eligible United First and United Business routes will offer Base, Standard and Flexible fares. United says the onboard experience remains the same regardless of the fare tier.
• Base is the cheapest option. For domestic United First, Base includes one checked bag and one carry-on, but seat selection costs extra. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded.
• Standard adds flexibility. Travelers get free seat selection and two checked bags, along with a carry-on and the ability to change their flight. Tickets remain nonrefundable.
• Flexible offers the most options. This fare includes free seat selection, two checked bags, a carry-on, flight changes and ticket refunds.
• United Business gets the same structure. On eligible international routes to Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, Base includes United Club access, one checked bag and one carry-on, while Standard and Flexible add benefits such as a second checked bag, free seat selection and flight changes. Flexible also allows refunds.
The Smarter Take: United’s new Base fare could make premium-cabin tickets more accessible, but the lower price comes with meaningful restrictions. Before booking, compare the fare tiers based on how much flexibility, baggage and seat-selection freedom you actually need.
