5 Reasons Premium Credit Cards Are Getting Harder to Maximize

    Sep 29

Premium travel cards once made it relatively easy to justify hefty annual fees with airport lounges, statement credits and travel perks. Now, higher fees and tighter rules are making those benefits harder to capture.

The changes don’t necessarily eliminate the value of premium cards—but they make it more important to understand the fine print.

    1. Lounge Access Is Getting More Restricted

American Express and Capital One have tightened rules around bringing guests into airport lounges.

Amex now requires guests to be traveling on the same flight as the cardholder in certain circumstances, while Capital One charges Venture X cardholders $45 for an adult guest unless they meet a $75,000 annual spending threshold.

    2. Statement Credits Come With More Conditions

Credits that once felt simple can now require specific purchases, minimum spending or enrollment.

The article notes that the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $10 DoorDash credit now requires a $20 minimum purchase on pickup orders after DoorDash changed its requirements.

    3. Reward Workarounds Are Disappearing

Some cardholders have relied on creative ways to use benefits beyond their intended purpose. Issuers are increasingly closing those loopholes.

For example, American Express ended a workaround that allowed its $200 airline credit to be routed through a United program and used toward flights.

    4. Annual Fees Are Rising

Premium cards are becoming more expensive to hold. One Amex Platinum cardholder featured in the article saw her annual fee increase from $695 to $895 and reconsidered whether the benefits still justified the cost.

    5. You Have to Pay More Attention

The biggest change may be how much effort it takes to extract the full value from premium cards.

Benefits can have expiration dates, enrollment requirements, spending thresholds, eligible-purchase restrictions and changing terms. As one points enthusiast quoted in the article put it, there is still value available, but it can require more time and attention.

The smarter take: A premium card isn’t automatically valuable because it has a long list of perks. Calculate the benefits you can realistically use after accounting for the annual fee and the restrictions attached to each perk.

    Premium Credit Cards. Travel Rewards.
