Chase Points Are About to Get More Expensive at Hyatt

    Sep 29

A major change to the Chase–Hyatt transfer relationship is coming Oct. 1, and the right move depends largely on whether you actually use Hyatt points.

For some Chase cardholders, transferring now could preserve the current 1:1 ratio. For others, keeping points flexible may make more sense.

Here are five situations to consider.

    1. You Have a Sapphire Reserve

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Reserve for Business account that retains the 1:1 Hyatt transfer ratio, there’s less reason to transfer points speculatively.

You can move eligible Chase Ultimate Rewards points into that account and retain access to the 1:1 Hyatt ratio.

    2. You Don’t Have a Hyatt Trip Planned

If you’ve never used Hyatt points and don’t have a realistic plan to use them within the next 18 to 24 months, keeping your points with Chase preserves more flexibility.

Once Chase points are transferred to Hyatt, they generally can’t be moved back.

    3. You Regularly Use Hyatt

If Hyatt is already part of your travel strategy and you redeem points once or twice a year, transferring at least some points before the change could make sense.

The key is having a history or realistic plan for actually using them.

    4. You Already Know Your Hyatt Redemption

This is the simplest situation. If you have a specific Hyatt stay in mind, calculate how many points you’ll need and consider transferring that amount before Oct. 1.

After the change, the same Hyatt award could require significantly more Chase points.

    5. Understand the New Math

If your Chase account moves from 1:1 to 4:3, you’ll need 33% more Chase points to receive the same number of Hyatt points.

For example, 60,000 Hyatt points currently require 60,000 Chase points at 1:1. At 4:3, the same 60,000 Hyatt points would require 80,000 Chase points.

The smarter take: Don’t transfer Chase points simply because a deadline is approaching. If you already use Hyatt or have a specific redemption planned, the Oct. 1 change matters much more. If you don’t have a Hyatt use in mind, Chase points remain more flexible before you commit them.
