The Credit Card Timing Trick That Could Help Your Score

    Oct 9

Paying your credit card bill in full every month is one of the best habits you can have. But there’s another date that can matter if you’re trying to keep your credit utilization low: your statement closing date.

Credit card companies typically report your balance to the credit bureaus around the end of each billing cycle—not necessarily on your payment due date.

That creates a timing gap many cardholders overlook.

    The simple strategy

Imagine your payment is due early in the month, but your statement closes several days later. If you pay the bill to $0 and then put several large purchases on the card before the statement closes, the issuer could report that higher balance.

Your payment history remains perfect, but your reported credit utilization could temporarily look higher.

A credit expert cited by CNBC Select recommends paying attention to both dates:

    • Mark your payment due date on your calendar.

    • Find your statement closing date for each card.

    • If you’re trying to optimize your reported utilization, keep spending relatively low before the statement closes.

    • Pay the balance down before that reporting point rather than waiting until the next due date.

This doesn’t mean you should stop using your cards. And paying by the due date remains essential for avoiding late payments and interest.

    Why utilization matters

Credit utilization is essentially the percentage of your available revolving credit that you’re using. A lower reported balance can generally be better for your credit profile.

That becomes particularly important before applying for a mortgage, auto loan or other major financing, where your credit profile can influence the terms you receive.

The strategy also isn’t a substitute for the fundamentals: pay on time, avoid unnecessary debt and maintain accounts responsibly.

    The smarter take:

Don’t just watch the date your credit-card payment is due. The statement closing date can tell you when your spending balance is most likely to matter for your reported utilization.
