If a European getaway sounds better with quiet streets, green spaces and a slower pace, Tallinn may be worth putting on the list.
A new ranking of 66 European cities named Tallinn, Estonia, the continent’s most relaxing city for 2026. The analysis considered factors including walkability, green space, noise, air pollution, crime and safety.
Tallinn scored 92.8 out of 100, with particularly low nighttime noise exposure helping it stand out. The study found that just 0.84% of residents were exposed to road and rail noise at night, the lowest share among its top 10 cities.
But the appeal goes well beyond quiet nights.
A city built for slowing down
Tallinn’s medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobblestone streets, historic towers, cafés, museums and restaurants.
Its compact center also makes it easy to explore on foot without constantly relying on transportation. Parks and waterfront areas provide additional places to step away from the city’s historic core and simply slow down.
Tallinn wasn’t Estonia’s only standout. Tartu ranked third, scoring 86.6, with low noise levels and a lively university atmosphere.
Zurich took second place, scoring 88.1. The Swiss city stood out for walkability and green space, while other cities earned recognition for specific factors: Ljubljana for its share of green space, Tampere for air quality and The Hague for safety.
The study’s top 10 also included cities in Norway, Lithuania, Croatia and Switzerland.
The smarter take: If your ideal European trip involves exploring beautiful streets without the constant noise and rush of a major capital, Tallinn offers a combination of history, walkability and calm that is hard to ignore.
