Delta’s New Riyadh Route Is on Hold Until 2027

    Oct 12

Delta Air Lines has postponed its planned nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, until at least March 2027, delaying a route that would mark a major expansion of the airline’s Middle East network.

The airline had planned to launch the service on October 23, initially operating daily flights before reducing the schedule to three flights per week. The decision to delay comes amid escalating regional tensions and reported attacks that damaged Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and left hundreds injured.

Delta says Saudi Arabia remains an important long-term market, but passenger and crew safety will determine when the route can begin.

What affected passengers need to know

Travelers booked on the canceled Atlanta–Riyadh flights before March should check the My Trips section of Delta’s website or app. Available options may include:

    • Rebooking on an alternative itinerary.
    • Rerouting through another airport or airline, where available.
    • Requesting a refund, depending on the ticket and applicable terms.

Because the airport’s operating status and airline schedules may change, passengers with other flights connecting through Riyadh should also confirm their itineraries directly with their airline before departure.

    Why this route matters

The planned service would give Delta a direct connection to Saudi Arabia from its Atlanta hub and create opportunities to connect passengers to destinations across the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent through its planned relationship with Riyadh Air.

Delta’s competitors, American Airlines and United Airlines, already have relationships with the Saudi carrier. The new route is also supported by Saudi Arabia’s efforts to attract additional international flights through its Air Connectivity Program.

Delta plans to operate the service using its Airbus A350-900 aircraft once flights begin. However, the revised timeline could change if regional conditions remain unstable.

The smarter take: If you’re planning travel to Saudi Arabia, don’t build an itinerary around Delta’s new nonstop flight just yet. Treat March 2027 as a tentative target, monitor official airline updates and compare alternative routes before making nonrefundable plans.
