Citi ThankYou points just became significantly more flexible for travelers who know how to use airline award charts.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is now a Citi transfer partner, and the partnership launched with a 30% transfer bonus through Oct. 24.

That means 1,000 eligible Citi points can become 1,300 JAL miles when transferred during the promotion.

But the real opportunity goes beyond flights to Japan.

• Business class to Japan: JAL prices some U.S.-Japan business-class awards at 55,000 miles one-way. With the 30% bonus, that’s about 43,000 Citi points for a one-way business-class seat, plus taxes and fees.

• London for fewer miles: JAL also allows Mileage Bank members to book partner airlines. One example in the source shows a British Airways business-class round trip from Houston to London for 85,000 JAL miles. With the bonus, that’s roughly 66,000 Citi points.

• Short domestic flights: JAL’s distance-based partner pricing can produce unusual sweet spots. A Houston–Dallas round trip on American Airlines can cost 12,000 JAL miles, or about 10,000 Citi points with the current bonus.

• Don’t transfer before finding an award: Citi transfers are generally irreversible, and JAL miles expire after 36 months. Award availability can also be limited.

• Open a JAL account early: JAL generally doesn’t allow new members to redeem miles for awards within 60 days of opening an account. Creating an account ahead of time can avoid that restriction when an award becomes available.

The smarter take: The biggest opportunity here isn’t simply getting to Japan. JAL’s partner award pricing can unlock flights on airlines such as American, British Airways and Air France, sometimes at surprisingly low mileage rates. Just find the award before moving your Citi points.
