Sunshine, walkable streets and plenty of green space may make Lisbon a particularly feel-good place to visit.
A 2025 study from BookRetreats ranked Lisbon, Portugal, No. 1 among destinations based on several “feel-good factors.”
The analysis looked at things such as annual sunshine, walkability, public green space, noise and light pollution, and the availability of restaurants classified as healthy.
Lisbon stood out with more than 2,800 hours of sunshine a year, abundant green spaces and a compact city center that’s easy to explore on foot.
Its viewpoints are another bonus. Instead of rushing between attractions, travelers can explore neighborhoods on foot and stop at panoramic overlooks along the way.
What makes the trip feel easier?
Lisbon isn’t just about famous sights. Its appeal comes from how easy it can be to build enjoyable experiences into an ordinary day:
Walk instead of taking a car. Many neighborhoods are compact enough to explore on foot.
Build in outdoor time. Parks, viewpoints and waterfront areas give you plenty of opportunities to slow down.
Leave room for wandering. Some of Lisbon’s appeal comes from exploring without packing every hour with attractions.
Helsinki ranked second, followed by Orlando, while Athens and Edinburgh rounded out the study’s top five.
The smarter take: The best vacation isn’t necessarily the one with the most attractions. A city that’s sunny, walkable and easy to enjoy at your own pace can make the entire trip feel better.
