Travelers in Columbus, Ohio, will soon have a new way to reach Europe without connecting through another U.S. airport. Lufthansa plans to launch the city’s first-ever nonstop European route, linking John Glenn Columbus International Airport with Frankfurt, Germany, beginning in spring 2027.
The new service is scheduled to start May 5, 2027, with flights operating three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. According to The Points Guy, bookings are expected to open October 20, 2026.
For travelers, the biggest advantage goes beyond reaching Germany. Frankfurt is one of Lufthansa’s major hubs, giving passengers access to connecting flights across Europe and other international destinations without first traveling to a larger U.S. gateway.
What’s on the flight?
Lufthansa plans to operate the route with its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring three cabin options:
- Business class: 28 Allegris business-class suites.
- Premium economy: 28 seats offering an alternative to standard economy.
- Economy: 197 seats.
The route is also significant for Columbus itself. While other central U.S. cities have been adding transatlantic connections, Columbus has never had a nonstop flight to Europe, according to the report.
The new service is supported by revenue guarantees from JobsOhio, the state’s economic development organization, helping support the launch of the international connection.
Can you use miles?
Yes. Travelers can earn and redeem miles through Lufthansa’s Miles & More loyalty program. Eligible United MileagePlus members can also earn and redeem miles on the route, subject to applicable program rules.
This could make the service particularly useful for travelers who collect airline rewards and want another option for reaching Europe.
What travelers should do next
If you live in central Ohio or nearby areas, compare the new nonstop service with existing connecting itineraries once fares become available. A direct flight may save time, but the best value will depend on ticket prices, schedules, and your final destination.
The smarter take: A nonstop European route can eliminate a domestic connection and make international travel easier to plan. If Europe is on your 2027 travel list, watch for Lufthansa’s booking launch and compare cash fares with mileage options before committing.
