The Amex Platinum for Families: Which Benefits Are Actually Worth Using?

    Oct 18

The American Express Platinum Card is known for luxury travel, but its value for families extends beyond airport lounges and hotel upgrades. From entertainment subscriptions to airport security benefits, the card offers several ways to offset everyday expenses.

However, with an $895 annual fee, the key is knowing which benefits your household will actually use.

    Make family travel more comfortable

Airport lounges can provide food, seating, and space to relax during long layovers. Eligible Platinum cardmembers can access participating lounges, including Priority Pass locations after enrollment. Guest policies vary, so check the rules before arriving with the family.

Hotel benefits can also help. The card offers up to $600 in annual statement credits for eligible prepaid bookings through Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection, subject to program requirements. Fine Hotels + Resorts stays may include breakfast for two, a property credit, and guaranteed late checkout.

For airport security, eligible cardmembers can receive credits toward CLEAR+, Global Entry, or TSA PreCheck fees. These programs work differently, so choose based on your family’s travel habits and eligibility.

    Put everyday credits to work

The Platinum also offers benefits that can help with household spending:

    • Walmart+: Up to $12.95 per month, plus applicable taxes, toward an eligible membership.
    • Uber Cash: Up to $200 annually for eligible U.S. rides and Uber Eats orders.
    • Digital entertainment: Up to $300 annually toward eligible subscriptions.
    • Resy dining: Up to $400 annually in statement credits at qualifying U.S. restaurants.

Enrollment, eligible purchases, monthly or quarterly limits, and other restrictions apply. Unused credits may expire, so review the terms before counting them as savings.

    Help older children build credit

Children aged 13 and older can be added as additional cardmembers under the program described in the source. A no-annual-fee Companion Platinum Card may be an option. Eligible account activity may help establish credit history once reported to credit bureaus, but the primary cardholder remains responsible for purchases.

Is the annual fee worth it?

Not necessarily. The card earns strong rewards on eligible flights and prepaid hotels, but many everyday purchases earn just one Membership Rewards point per dollar. Families spending heavily on groceries, gas, and dining may benefit from pairing it with a card that rewards those categories more generously.

The smarter take: Don’t justify the Platinum by adding up every advertised benefit. Calculate the value of credits you would use anyway, account for enrollment requirements, and compare that figure with the annual fee. If the benefits fit your existing habits, the card could deliver meaningful value. If you must spend more to use them, the savings may be an illusion.
